The popular music reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ is back with a bang on Zee after a gap of years. Jaspreet Bajwa, a young blind musician with a voice that goes straight to the heart has come all the way from Canada to participate. Last week Jaspreet sang ‘Sapnon se bhare naina’ to a standing ovation from both judges and jury.
What makes Jaspreet special? For the first five seconds, you think it’s just compassion. He got cancer of the eyes as a child. The worried parents took him to a doctor who dismissed their anxiety as baseless. When his condition continued to worsen, they took him to a specialist who diagnosed it as cancer. The specialist told Jaspreet’s parents that if they had come a month earlier, the child’s eyes could have been saved. The pity of it! So, is sympathy all that it takes to top the charts week after week? Obviously not. Jaspreet has worked very hard to train his beautiful voice. He understands the intricacies of music. Life throws problems at us and asks: ‘What are you going to do about it?’ Eyes that can’t see colour and shape don’t have to turn into stones. They can be gentle and full of the stuff dreams are made of.
Instead of cursing fate, Jaspreet is upbeat and full of fun, laughter and love. He flirts with any girl who will give him half a chance! Aishwarya Rai Bachan came to the sets to promote her latest film ‘Sarbjit.’ Jaspreet serenaded her with ‘Aankhen khuli hon ya ke band/deedar unka hota hai.’ And then he said something that brought a lump to everybody’s throat: I’ve never regretted being blind but today I wish God would grant me sight for five seconds so that I could see the most beautiful woman in the world.’
There’s no dearth of singers with technical excellence on the show. What makes Jaspreet a great artist is not just his voice but the simple, direct way in which he pours his heart into every word he utters. Har lafz seedha dil par utar jaata hai…
All of us have our share of problems and difficulties. Often we are faced with debilitating circumstances. How we deal with them is up to us. We can sit and curse our luck or use the darkness to power us to dizzying heights of success. We can learn from Jaspreet and turn misfortune into a door that leads us to a life full of music – and fame and fortune and inevitably money and status. We can be the best possible versions of ourselves. That’s all we need for a rich and full life.
